The
Quarry :-
The
Quarry by W. H. Auden is a ballad. The Ballad is a mixture of beautiful
traditional folk songs and modern literary touches. The reader is kept guessing
until its climax and conclusion. The poem is in the form of a series of
questions and replies.
The
beginning of the poem is arresting in its abruptness. It is the lover who poses
questions to which his ladylove answers. The situation is that the lover has
been chased by a band of soldiers for unknown reasons and in order to escape
from that the lover has taken shelter with his lady love.
As
the poem begins, the lady hears the sound of drumming at a distance and becomes
curious to know who the drummers are. The lover merely says that it is a group
of soldiers. The subsequent stanzas clearly show that the group of soldiers
have been moving towards a definite direction.
The
soldiers come with their swords in the air shining brightly against sunshine.
The lady asks the lover what the soldiers are doing and he replies that they
are perhaps performing their morning routine. Suddenly the soldiers take a turn
and the lover immediately kneels down. The lady asks the lover why the soldiers
have reined their horses and who they wanted to see. He thinks it is the person or the farmer. But
the soldiers passes them all. It is here that the lover conveys her even as the
soldiers break open the door to enter their house. The poem ends here and
leaves the conclusion suggestive to the readers.
The
poem Quarry by W. H. Auden made us very interesting from the beginning till the
end. But at the end the poet W. H. Auden leaves that to the imagination of the
readers. We assume that he would be caught up by the soldiers.
